Bohemia opened in 2003 in a tiny little warehouse space in Tucson’s Lost Barrio Shopping District with the mission of promoting and celebrating local artists and handmade artistry.
At the time, very few shops had this focus which meant artists had very few venues to show and sell their work. In a town with more working artists than coffee shops, that was a real shame! People were only exposed to the work of these fine artists and craftspeople at fairs and farmer’s markets for the most part. Owner Tana Kelch, saw a great need for a space to be created where great work could be display and people could see it and buy it everyday.
The response to the concept has been astounding…seven years in business, two expansions (that included one move to our current location), hundreds of artists represented and supported, many great local awards and accolades and thousands of happy shoppers!
Bohemia’s policy is to deal only with local Tucson artists (although we do stretch the boundaries for some fabulous artists in other regions of Arizona!). We feel this provides a wonderful sense of community for the artists and customers alike. And it gives Bohemia an amazing selection of handmade goodness that represents the art of the southwest (without being southwest…you will find no howling coyotes or kokopelli’s here!!). Each purchase is a little part of Tucson and Arizona…and it goes right back into the economy of this fine town! |
